The gassing of the Kurds occurred in 1988. Over twenty years later I doubt it wold still be occurring.
His sons would have, in all probability, been assassinated, probably by their own father. Who didn't like what they were doing, because it brought negative publicity to him and he was beginning to want to be remembered as some heroic figure, and heroic figures don't have demented children.
There had already been several attempts on their lives.
The election of a US president doesn't mean much to dictators, unless you wish to expend American lives and fortune on an endless quest to make the world good and pure, there are always going to be cruel dictatorships. Al Gore would not have left Afghanistan to attack Iraq. Bush lost sight of why we were there, which was to get Osama, not to make the Iraqis safe from the cruelty of their leaders.
